Gluten Free Bread in Australia

What I would do to have some yummy, soft, fresh Turkish Bread with vegimite for breakfast - or that soft, warm italian bread you are given in restaurants with oil and balsamic to soak it in.....

OK, so I've never found gluten free bread that gets even vaguely close to this. But I've found bread that is not only edible (when you get used to it - and you do, I promise) but will become a staple. I still believe that all gluten free bread is best used toasted (and toasted well) but if you get one of my picks on the day they are baked, they could be used to make a sandwich (especially the bread from Choices - see below).

So, my picks:

Naturally Gluten Free: based in Sydney, but deliever and stock in other places around the country. These guys have done a great job. The crunch is my pick of their products, and I'm excited to see if they continue to bring out more and interesting products. Their bread is so filling and satisfying, definitely my favorite. http://naturallyglutenfree.com.au

Choices Gluten Free bakery in Sydney. It doesn't really matter where you live, they will deliver! Their range of bread is great - everything from white, to wholemeal to grainy bread, par-baked rolls, pitta - you name it, they have it. They also have some nice treats to add to your order! Order $40 worth and they will deliver within metro sydney the next day for free - very cool, and a great, great find! http://www.choicesglutenfree.com.au/ My pick is their banana bread pre-mix - it's beautiful!

Thank you to both these guys for making the effort to ensure we can enjoy gluten free bread, and also thanks for continuing to innovate and produce more great products all the time.

  1. Hi there~
Thanks for linking the bakeries, I am moving to Australia this month, and looking forward to trying their breads.
I haven't been diagnosed with Coeliacs disease, but wheat doesn't seem to agree with me anyway.

  4. Hi Zoe,I’m not sure if you’ve already found these but I was just quickly looking at your blog and thought if you haven’t, you might like too . . . ? Smooze is a fruit ice made from freshly squeezed fruit juices and pulp (not reconstituted juices) combined with freshly pressed coconut milk to give it a creamy smoothie like texture in 3 x exotic flavours – Mango & Coconut, Pink Guava & Coconut, and Pineapple & Coconut. In addition to being gluten free, they are also completely 100% free of any artificial preservatives, colours and flavours as well as also being dairy free, cholesterol free and rich in Vitamin C. Best of all, and as self-serving as this undoubtedly sounds, they’re really really yummy  Smooze is available in both Coles and Woolworths/Safeway supermarkets along with an increasing number of IGA and other independent supermarkets and is sold as a shelf stable product - it’s the natural standout in the toppings & cones section! You can read more information at www.smooze.com.au I hope you decide to give them a try . . . Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or feedback.paul

  8. I love choices bread - especially the fact that it's free of so many common allergens.

On the other hand, I recently posted about a potential solution to gluten intolerance and celiac disease that may enable you to have the 'real thing' before you know it:

  11. Hi guys, I don't have coeliac but have heaps of probs with my gut (docs say IBS) anyway found an organic spelt bread in an indie supermarket a few months back - Culina Organic Wholegrain Spelt - YUM! Can't get it every week as it disappears off the shelf too quickly so I'm picking it up direct from the bakery next week :)

  12. Hi - Recently we had a fantastic gluten free breakfast at the Langham Hotel in Melbourne and they had just the best gluten free bread I have ever eaten. It was organic and made by Healthybake in Melbourne. A must for you to look out for and organic in the bargain.

  13. Thanks for this Zoe! I was wondering, do you know any cafes that supply gluten free toast which is relatively cheap? I went to a cafe the other day and got charged six dollars for a slice which is ridiculous. Has this ever happened to you?

My blog has a lot of information on Gluten-Free lifestyles if you are interested in having a look! http://ingredieat1.wordpress.com/
